Overview

Maidstone Hospital is a major healthcare facility in Kent, and its drainage systems are essential to maintaining hygiene, safety, and uninterrupted patient care. When a critical main drainage line became completely blocked, causing overflows, foul odours, and a real risk of service disruption, the estates team contacted PipeFlow Drainage for an emergency response.

Our team attended immediately, diagnosed the root cause using CCTV technology, cleared the blockage, and carried out a full de-scaling process to rehabilitate the pipework. The goal from the start was to deliver a long-term solution, not a temporary fix.

The Challenge

The hospital's estates management team reported that a key underground drain serving clinical areas, wards, and support buildings had become fully blocked. Drains were backing up, manholes were overflowing, and there was a significant risk of contamination and operational downtime.

The build-up of scale, silt, and residue had narrowed the pipe over years, and there were concerns about possible damage or deterioration to the main line. The team needed the blockage located and cleared urgently, with minimal disruption to hospital activities and a solution that would prevent recurrence.

Given the sensitive environment, speed, accuracy, and non-invasive methods were essential.

Our Response

Step 1: Emergency Attendance and CCTV Drain Survey

Our engineers arrived within 90 minutes of the call, fully equipped and certified to work in healthcare settings.

We began with a comprehensive CCTV drain survey, inserting a high-resolution, remote-controlled camera into the system to inspect the internal condition of the pipework. This allowed us to:

Pinpoint the exact location of the blockage
Identify heavy mineral scale, grease deposits, and silt accumulation that had reduced the pipe's internal diameter by more than 50%
Confirm there was no structural damage or collapse
Map the layout and condition of the main line for future reference

The survey footage was recorded and shared with the estates team straight away, so they understood the issue and our proposed solution before any physical work began.

Step 2: Blockage Clearance and High-Pressure Jetting

Using our industrial-grade high-pressure water jetting system, operating at up to 4,000 psi, we cleared the primary blockage and flushed away loose debris. This restored basic flow.

However, our inspection showed that heavy, hardened scale remained bonded to the pipe walls. This was the main cause of repeated slow drainage and blockages over time. Clearing the blockage alone would not have been enough.

Step 3: Main Line Rehabilitation, the De-Scaling Process

To resolve the problem permanently, we carried out a professional de-scaling procedure using specialist mechanical tools designed to safely remove mineral deposits, limescale, and encrusted residue without damaging the pipe material.

The process involved:
Feeding rotating de-scaling heads through the entire length of the affected section
Carefully abrading and breaking down hardened build-up
Flushing the system repeatedly to remove all dislodged material
A final high-pressure wash to leave the pipe walls smooth and clean

This restored the pipe to its original internal diameter, maximising flow capacity and reducing the risk of future blockages.

Step 4: Post-Work Inspection and Handover

Once works were complete, we performed a second CCTV survey to verify that the line was fully clear, scale-free, and in excellent working order. We provided a full report including before-and-after footage, a condition assessment, and recommendations for future drain maintenance.

The Results

Full flow restored within four hours of arrival
Pipework rehabilitated to its original diameter and performance
No excavation or disruption to hospital grounds or operations
Risk of future blockages significantly reduced
Full compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations

What the Hospital Said

"When our main drain failed, we needed a company we could trust to act fast and get it right first time, especially in a busy hospital where hygiene and safety are critical. PipeFlow Drainage didn't disappoint. They arrived quickly, used CCTV to show us exactly what was wrong, and explained clearly what needed to be done. The de-scaling work was thorough, and they left the site clean and tidy. Since the work was completed, the system has performed perfectly, with no further issues. Professional, reliable, and highly recommended."
